This photo was taken on 18 October 1920 and records the wedding of a young Armenian lady to a corporal in the British army at Bardizag [Bachtchejig], near Constantinople. The bride is Herranoush Momdjian, my distant relative and I’m still searching for more information about her family history. The groom was John Fitzgerald Batts (or Butts). No more is presently known about him, or about the other side of the wider family.

This photo illustrates how World War 1 brought some people of different races and nationalities together, which has been a feature of Armenians in the Diaspora since.

(Ana is one of the project’s most dedicated volunteers and came across to some interesting photographs in her family archive which might be relevant to our project. While she’s investigating the story more, she kindly agreed to share a little snippet of her family story with us).
